Gingerbread Measurement: Finding Area and Perimeter Using Candy!
This activity last is a fun way to introduce your students to the concept of area and perimeter.
Directions: Explain perimeter as “around the outside” and area as “covering the whole picture.” After discussing the meaning of area and perimeter, measure the perimeter and area of each picture using peppermints, Hershey kisses and Red Hots. There are 19 different pictures to measure. As the students measure, count and record their measurement on your class chart. After you finish measuring have a discussion about why the measurements were different. Finally, eat the candy!
This is a very engaging, hands on activity that my students loved and I hope yours will too!
