Phonics Activities & Worksheets-Embedded Mnemonics Sounds and Spellings-K–2

Help your students connect the sounds they hear to the spellings they read and write! Mnemonic Sounds & Spellings brings together phonics activities, worksheets, charts, word-building cards, and easy to remember character stories for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

When students recognize a phonics pattern during your lesson but need help applying it independently, a familiar picture can serve as a useful reminder. These embedded mnemonics connect pictures with spelling patterns to give students a visual cue when reading and writing.

Go beyond the alphabet.

This comprehensive resource includes initial letter sounds alongside consonant digraphs, additional consonant spellings, long vowels, vowel teams, other vowel sounds, R-controlled vowels, silent e, and schwa. Choose the patterns your students have learned and use the materials to reinforce your explicit phonics instruction.

Introduce a pattern with its story and chant. Revisit it on a chart. Practice finding and writing it on a worksheet. Then use the cards to build and change words.

The familiar mnemonics connect these activities, so students can return to the same visual cues as they practice.

BUILD IN SUPPORT—THEN GRADUALLY REMOVE IT.

Begin word building with the embedded mnemonic cards. As students become more confident, replace familiar mnemonic cards with plain letters and spelling cards. You can adjust the amount of visual support while students continue practicing the same skills.

PREPARATION

Print worksheets as needed. Print, cut, and laminate reusable charts, puzzles, and word-building cards as desired. Print additional letter cards for words with repeated letters.
