This winter olympics measurement unit is designed to introduce students to measurement using non-standard units. The students use paper plates, frisbees, laundry baskets and themselves to “compete” in the “Measurement Winter Olympics.” You will use gold medals as your non standard unit of measure. This unit also provides a great way to teach students about sportsmanship. To supplement this unit you can show clips of the actual Olympic events and use our Winter Games Research Creation! You can also beef up your math & literacy centers with our Winter Olympic Themed Math & Literacy Centers!
This unit can be easily adapted for 1st and 2nd grade by using standard units of measurement such as feet and inches.
To prepare, simply print and laminate 10-15 of the gold medals and secure them the floor in a straight line. Place a piece of tape to mark the starting line. Each students gets 1 turn in each event. Record answers on individual recording sheets and on class charts for each event. I included chart labels for each event in this packet.
